Portugal’s national football team captain and Juventus of Italy’s latest signing, Cristiano Ronaldo has received a two-year prison sentence and a fine of nearly €19 million (£17m) after pleading guilty to tax evasion in Spain.

The 33-year-old was charged with four counts of tax fraud amounting to €14.7m (£13m) which he committed between 2011 and 2014.

Having pleaded guilty to the charges, Ronaldo is however unlikely to go to prison as Spanish law stipulates that a sentence of below two years for a first offence can be served on probation but he would  pay back the full amount of tax, plus interest, to the Spanish treasury.

The football star will be required to pay the €3.2 million fine plus the €5.7 million in back taxes, €1 million in accrued interest and €250 euros-per-day for the 48 months covering the prison sentence.

This amount is likely to be only part of the striker’s fines over the case which is expected to rise to around €19 million in total.

The Spanish tax agency has now given their approval to the agreement reached between Ronaldo, the prosecutor’s office and the state attorney.
