The Counter-Terrorism Command of the London Metropolitan Police is leading an investigation into an incident that saw a car collide with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday morning.

According to the Police authorities, two persons have been taken to local hospitals following the incident which occurred at 7:37 am local time although the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

A man in his late 20s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of terrorist offences over the incident which has also resulted in the closure of the Westminster Tube station.

“At this stage, we are treating this as a terrorist incident and the (Metropolitan Police) Counter Terrorism Command is now leading the investigation,” the police said in a statement.

Eyewitnesses said the car was travelling at high speed when it hit several pedestrians and cyclists before crashing into barriers outside the Houses of Parliament.

The incident is coming a little over a year after four persons were killed and at least 50 injured  after a man, later identified as Khalid Masood drove an SUV into pedestrians on the city’s Westminster Bridge.
