Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has conceded defeat in the country’s presidential election, congratulating opposition candidate Peter Mutharika on his victory.
In a statement issued by the government, Chakwera acknowledged the outcome in an address to the nation from the presidential palace, pledging to ensure a peaceful transition of power.
“I thank Malawians for entrusting me with the presidency,” Chakwera said, adding that he would work with his successor to guarantee stability and national unity.
Although the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has not yet officially declared the winner, Chakwera’s concession signals the opposition candidate’s clear lead. The MEC is expected to formally announce the results on Wednesday in the capital, Lilongwe.
Chakwera’s acceptance of defeat marks a significant moment in Malawi’s democracy, underscoring the importance of peaceful transitions of power in the southern African nation.
