A tragic building collapse early Monday on Coast Street, Oyingbo, Lagos, has claimed the life of one person, while 26 others were rescued from the debris, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
The incident occurred shortly after midnight when a two-storey residential structure collapsed. LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, revealed that a distress call was received at 12:11 a.m., triggering a swift response from emergency teams under the supervision of Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu.
“Our teams evacuated 21 people to various general hospitals, where they are receiving medical treatment,” he said. Five other victims were treated at the scene and discharged. The body of the deceased has been deposited at a morgue for post-mortem examination.
Rescue operations continue, with LASEMA outlining a methodical approach: the disaster site has been divided into four zones, the inner areas serviced by light-duty equipment to avoid secondary collapses, and heavy-duty equipment used only in outer zones.
LASEMA is working alongside the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service, and the police to coordinate a thorough response and provide relief to displaced occupants.
Mr. Mohammed Olatunde, NEMA’s Head of Operations in Lagos, appealed to residents and relatives of victims to remain calm and cooperate with responders. “Every effort is being made to rescue everyone alive, by God’s grace,” he stated.
