A South African judge yesterday granted the wish of Reeva Steenkamp’s parents by allowing photographs of the slain girl after Oscar Pistorious shot her to be shown to the world. The parents had said they just wanted the world to see what the paralympian had done to their 29-year-old daughter. The very graphic pictures show Reeva after being shot in the head, elbow and hip.
It was Valentine’s Day three years ago when Oscar Pistorius murdered his model girlfriend, Reeva. He had faced trial and had been handed a five year sentence for culpable homicide and a concurrent three-year suspended sentence for reckless endangerment. Pistorius claims he mistook Reeva for an intruder and fearing his life was in danger, opened fire with three military grade Talon bullets that were designed to expand upon impact, causing severe damage to body tissue.
The judge, Thokozile Masipa, granted a public release of the six crime scene images showing the horrific impact the bullets had on Reeva’s skull with blood flowing around her head.
The conviction of Pistorius was upgraded to murder in December last year and he could face 15 years behind bars. The sentence is to be pronounced on July 6.
