Eighty four people have been confirmed dead in the attack on the city of Nice, France as people gathered to celebrate the Bastille Day. This attack marks the 7th terror attack in France in only eighteen months.
The nation has been placed on top alert following the ugly incident where a truck driver, now confirmed as 31 year old ISIS supporter, Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, sped through a celebrating crowd in a zigzag, for 2 kilometres and murdered 84 people. The driver speeding at 60 km/hr also got out of the truck to open fire on the people before French Police shot him dead. Weapons and grenades were later found in his vehicle by the authorities, meaning he intended for more damage.
An eyewitness told the BBC: “He died inside the vehicle – I saw his head (hanging) out of the window I could see it clearly, they kept shooting him from all sides just to be sure. They used a light to make sure no one else was inside the car then they asked us to run away in case there were others inside the car or a bomb.”
The French Interior Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve has said that 18 people are in critical condition following the tragedy.
French President, Francois Hollande who declared a three-month state of emergency has said: “France is filled with sadness by this new tragedy.”
