In what may seem as an effort at attaining a truce, the leaders of the two opposing factions of the embattled Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff met on Tuesday in Abuja..
Details of this were highlighted at a press conference tagged “Rejuvenating the PDP,” which was addressed by two principal officers of the opposing camps namely Senator Ben Obi, secretary to the Makarfi led caretaker committee and Cairo Ojougboh, Ali Modu Sheriff’s deputy.
A statement issued at the end of the conference read: “In reviewing the crisis that has engulfed our party since the loss of the 2015 general election after 16 years of uninterrupted leadership at the centre, it became obvious to both of us as principal actors that it is time to heal the wounds and bring about a united, focused and constructive opposition party that can bring sanity to our democratic process.”
“Based on the above, we have both agreed to consult widely with all relevant organs of the party; set up a joint committee that will carry out a holistic reconciliation of all aggrieved segments of our party.”
With, this development, most political observers, are agreed, the end could be in sight to the lingering war of attrition which has for long held down the hitherto boisterous and largest party in sub-Saharan Africa.
