A statement from the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has revealed that His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa, who is the reigning Edaiken N’Uselu will formally ascend the throne as Oba of Benin on Thursday, October 20.
Giving details of the coronation rites, Prof. Gregory Akenzua, who is himself the incumbent Enogie of Evbuobanosa/Abudu and Chairman of the Coronation Planning Committee told press men in Benin City that the ceremonies will start on Saturday, October 8, when the Edaiken is expected to depart his palace at Uselu for Eko–Ohae (the main palace of the Oba).
On the change of date from the earlier one, Akenzua said it was due to the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the Edo State gubernatorial election which was earlier billed for September 10, had been shifted to Wednesday, September 28.
He further stated that as part of the traditional requirements,all burial ceremonies in Benin stood prohibited throughout the coronation period.
