US President-elect, Donald Trump has announced his final choice for the position of Secretary of State to be Rex Tillerson, the Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil.
So much dust had been raised and serious concerns expressed by prominent politicians and establishment figures over the possibility of Tillerson becoming the man who flies the flag of American foreign policy.
Much of the reservation has to do with the fact that as ExxonMobil’s Chief Executive Officer, Rex Tillerson has deep relationship with many foreign governments around the world that could negatively impact on US foreign policy. He is said to be a close friend of Vladimir Putin of Russia.
However, Trump is very enthusiastic about his pick. He says of Tillerson:
“I have chosen one of the truly great business leaders in the world, Rex Tillerson, Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, to be Secretary of State.
“The thing I like best about Rex Tillerson is that he has vast experience at dealing successfully with all types of foreign governments.”
His enthusiasm appears to run against the apprehension already being expressed by some members of the Foreign Policy Committee of the US Congress. Trump knows too that his choice may be blocked by congress afterall, so, he has already begun to work on the lobby.
