Teachers who do not hold the certificate and license of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria may run into trouble this year. Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka has said the Federal Government plans to sack such teachers nationwide before the end of the year.
Anwuka who was speaking at a teacher induction ceremony at the Imo State University, Owerri on Monday, also said the two-year deadline earlier given to teachers to register with the TRCN will not be extended.
According to a statement released by TRCN’s spokesman, Muyiwa Ojewuyi, the event was also attended by the council’s Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye and the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Obasi.
The statement quoted Ajiboye as saying that the council will soon re-introduce the Professional Qualifying Examination for teachers (PQE) which will be a major requirement for being allowed into the teaching profession in Nigeria. In Ajiboye’s words: “There is no going back on TRCN’s professionalism drive across the country hence the council will soon reintroduce the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) which will serve as a major prerequisite for admittance into the teaching profession in Nigeria.”
