Head Coach of French Ligue I side, Paris St. Germain (PSG), Unai Emery, has hit out at his players for losing focus in the dramatic European Champions League match on Wednesday night.
The French Champions had a 4-0 advantage from the first leg and were leading 5-3 on aggregate with just two minutes of regulation time remaining.
However, a loss of concentration and focus in the dying moments of the nail-biting, second round encounter saw Barcelona scoring three goals in the spate of 8 minutes, the last coming from substitute, Sergio Roberto moments before centre referee, Deniz Aytekin blew the final whistle, to send Barcelona into the quarter finals on a 6-5 goal aggregate.
“In the last few minutes, we lost everything we had worked so hard for, and there’s no explanation for what happened in the final minutes, it was all for nothing,” Emery lamented.
“We have to accept that we had an opportunity to grow after playing so well in the first leg and gaining a lot of confidence and we didn’t take it.You learn from negative experiences in the future and this is a very negative experience for the players, for me and for my staff,” he added.
PSG players were left devastated after the exit but Emery said they only had themselves to blame for the loss. He however suggested that the officials were on Barcelona’s side that night.
