Twenty-two people have died and 59 others injured in a gruesome terror attack in the city of Manchester, United Kingdom last night.
The attack took place in a packed Manchester Arena where some 20,000 people, mostly teenagers, young adults and children gathered to watch a live concert by American singer, Ariana Grande.
The Greater Manchester Police Department believes a lone man, whose identity is yet to be revealed, detonated an Improvise Explosive Device, IED, which he strapped to his body and he did that right in the middle of the crowd in the packed arena.
The bomber is believed by the Police to be among those who died. The injured are being treated in 8 hospitals around the city.
Eyewitnesses say the concert was winding up at about 10:33 pm when the explosion happened. An 18- year-old girl who witnessed it all put it this way: “After Ariana ended her performance, people were making to go home. Suddenly, there was a flash followed by a very loud explosion. We knew it could not be a balloon, it was too loud. It was a bomb.
“Many people ran towards the centre of the Arena, but when they saw that was the spot where the explosion happened, they began to run back. At the centre, there were many dead bodies on the floor. There were also many injured people.
“People were desperate to escape from the Arena. There was a huge stampede. People just wanted to get out by all means. It was a night of horror and I am still in shock.”
The British Prime Minister, Theresa May has described the attack as one which stands out for its “appalling, sickening cowardice.” She said this morning after a meeting with the Emergency Committee called Cobra: “All acts of terrorism are cowardly attacks on innocent people, but this attack stands out for its appalling, sickening cowardice, deliberately targeting innocent, defenseless children and young people who should have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their lives.”
Ariana Grande herself has expressed profound sadness at the aftermath of her concert. She tweeted this morning: “Broken. From the bottom of my heart. I am so so sorry. I have no words.”
