Patience Jonathan, the wife of the immediate past president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of sending assassins to eliminate her.
She made the allegation in a letter written by her lawyers, Grandville Abibo (SAN) & Co., urging the House of Representatives to immediately intervene on her behalf before the anti-graft agency, who she claimed, failed to eliminate her in two attempts, finally succeeds with their plot.
She also accused the anti-graft body of bugging her personal telephone lines and those of her relatives as well as constantly threatening her with calls and text messages.
“There have been assassination attempts, at least twice, between February and April, 2017, against our client ostensibly by the operatives of the EFCC along the Yenagoa-Mbiama Road, Bayelsa State, in furtherance of its unlawful action against the former first family,” the letter read.
“The EFCC and its agents have repeatedly bugged the personal telephones of our client and her relations through its many operatives and has intimidated her with numerous threatening calls and text messages,” it added.
She further alleged that apart from the EFCC, other government agencies like the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) were also in the habit of harassing her NGOs which she claimed were only carrying out charity work for the benefit of Nigerians.
But the NDLEA through a statement it released on Monday through its Head, Public Affairs, Mitchell Ofoyeju said the allegations by the former First Lady were misleading and spurious as the anti-narcotics agency had no case against her.
The statement added that the agency was however equipped and ready to arrest and prosecute any individual or group no matter their status, who engage in the cultivation, trafficking and abuse of hard drugs.
