A free0speech group, the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University in New York has sued American President for blocking Twitter uses from following his @realDonaldTrump account.
The group’s lawsuit which is joined by seven other individual Twitter accounts argued that Trump’s action was a violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.
The suit filed at the Federal Court in the Southern District of New York also claimed that Trump’s blocking of the accounts from either criticizing, mocking or disagreeing with any of his tweets, amounted to an unconstitutional effort to suppress dissent.
According to the lawsuit, since Trump frequently uses his Twitter handle to make policy statements, his account qualifies as a public forum from which the government cannot restrict people on the basis of their views.
In a related statement, Joseph Papp, an author and one of the Twitter users involved in the suit said he had been a registered Republican for 10years and “felt a deep sense of unease” when he was blocked by Trump.
“Everyone being able to see the President’s tweets feels vital to democracy,” said Papp who claims he did not join the suit for political reasons.
