Multiple world boxing champion, Floyd Mayweather has announced his retirement from the sport after his 10th round knockout of UFC Champion, Conor McGregor at the packed T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the United States on Sunday morning.
Already regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time, Mayweather who came out of retirement for the “money fight” against McGregor, has now surpassed Ricky Marciano’s 49-0 record for most wins without a loss or draw.
Although the Irish-born McGregor was full of intent and unleashed a barrage of punches at Mayweather in the early rounds, the latter took control of the bout from the fourth round, landing blow after blow at the already weakened and struggling McGregor.
Finally in the 10th round, the match referee intervened and stopped the fight after Mayweather’s heavy jabs had thrown the Irishman, who offered no resistance of any kind, against the ropes.
“Our game plan was to take our time, go to him, let him shoot his shots early and then take him out down the stretch,” Mayweather said after the fight.
“We know in MMA, he fights for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, he started to slow down. I guaranteed to everybody that this wouldn’t go the distance. This was my last fight tonight. Tonight I chose the right dance partner to dance with. Conor, you are a hell of a champion,” he added.
