Nigeria’s senior female basketball team, D’Tigress on Sunday emerged African champions after defeating Senegal 65-48 to win the 2017 Afrobasket Championship held in Bamako, Mali.
The team, tutored by Sam Vincent won all their seven matches en-route to the finals which also earned them a spot in next year’s world women basketball championships.
After losing the first quarter to the Senegalese women by 18-12, D’Tigress crawled their way back into the game to make it 33-28 in their favour at the end of the second quarter.
The girls consolidated on their lead in the third quarter with 15 points as against the 7 scored by the Senegalese before securing the win which makes it the third for the country after the 2003 triumph in Mozambique and the 2005 victory on home soil.
