Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has described the recent strike embarked upon by resident doctors in the country as an act of rascality.
In a statement issued by Samuel Olowookere, the Deputy Director of Press in the ministry, Ngige said the Federal Government was shocked by the action of the doctors after they had reached an agreement with the Ministry of Health on its six-point demand.
He further accused the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) of breaching the law by reneging on an agreement which had detailed timelines for implementation.
“This is an industrial rascality and the trade unions must fashion out ways of ensuring that their members keep to collective agreements,” he said.
“NARD signed a collective bargaining agreement and less than 48 hours after, they embarked on strike. This is a breach of the law. Workers should not breach the law of the land because the law protects them more than the employers,” he added.
He used the medium to implore all stakeholders to attend the crucial reconciliatory meeting between the doctors and the federal government which is scheduled to hold on November 7, 2017 as against September 6 that was earlier announced.
