Tunisia’s national basketball team on Sunday at the Sale Omnisports de Rades in Rades,Tunisia defeated Nigeria’s male basketball team, D’Tigers in the finals of the 2017 Afrobasket Championship.
The Tunisians who co-hosted the tournament with Senegal and who beat D’Tigers two years ago at the same venue in the group stage of the same competition, once again humbled the Nigerians 77-65 to emerge as African champions.
D’Tigers, the tournament’s highest scoring team prior to the finals, failed to live up to the occasion as the Tunisians, buoyed by a vociferous home crowd used top notch 3-point shooting to keep the Nigerians at bay, winning three out of the four quarters.
Although D’Tigers failed in their bid to become the first team to successfully defend their title in eight years, their talismanic forward, Ike Diogu who plays for the Golden State Warriors in the American NBA was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
