The United Nations (UN) has said it will give its support to any Nigerian woman vying for elective position in the country’s 2019 general elections.
The Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka stated this when she met with Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Bande and his deputy, Ambassador Samson Itegboje at the Nigerian Mission.
Mlambo-Ngcuka, who had visited Nigeria in July alongside the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed to address the challenges confronting girls and women in the country said she was in the country again because of the need to increase women participation in politics.
The UN chief said the UN women with the help of other civil society groups will support all the women who intend to contest in elections in different parts of the country.
She disclosed that the women were also in the country to renew their commitment to support the Chibok girls who were recently released from captivity as well as look after the girls and women that were in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
