Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki on Monday said that the Upper Chamber will look into the recent clashes between members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Nigerian Army in parts of Abia and Rivers states.

Saraki, who made the disclosure in a post he made via his Facebook page noted that the Defence Headquarter’s categorization of IPOB as a militant terrorist organization was unconstitutional and did not follow due process.

“Following the recent clash between the military and members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), I hereby call for calm and restraint by all Nigerians so that we would all jointly find the right solution to the current problem rather than worsening the crisis,” Saraki said.

“I want to make it clear that the National Assembly intends to embark on a fact-finding investigation aimed at determining what actually happened during the period of the military exercise in the South East.

“We want to be able to sift the facts from the fiction and determine who did what. It is quite clear that all the facts are  not yet known. We assure Nigerians that there will be no cover up. We intend to lay the facts bare,” he added.

He pleaded with all Nigerians to strive to maintain peace, tranquility and stability in the country to ensure that all Nigerians, no matter their religion or tribe remain protected and safe under the law.

While commending the military for their dogged commitment towards maintaining peace in different parts of the country, Saraki urged them to exercise restraint and show respect for fundamental human rights even in the face of provocation.
