The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to channel the funds recovered from corrupt practices into funding the nation’s senior football team, the Super Eagles following their qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Obinna Ogba while raising order 42 of Senate rules pointed out that the Super Eagles were exceptional in defeating the Zambians and therefore deserved all the encouragement it could get from the government.
Senator Samuel Anyanwu, representing Imo East Senatorial District added that Nigerian sports had the history of not being adequately funded and suggested that loot recovered by the current administration should be used in funding the Eagles at the Mundial.
Anyanwu said: “Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, Nigeria has always been qualifying, but paucity of funds has always been an issue despite wonderful performances like these.
“I want to suggest that stolen funds recovered by the federal government scattered here and there should be used to fund the Super Eagles,” he added.
On his own part, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki commended the coaching crew and players of the Super Eagles for their high level of patriotism and urged the nation’s Sport Ministry to release funds on time to enable the team commence early preparations for the global fiesta.
