Embattled Zimbabwean President, Robert Gabriel Mugabe has refused to step down despite increasing calls from various quarters for him to honourably resign.
In a much anticipated address to the nation on Sunday night, a stern looking Mugabe insisted that he was still in charge of the country’s affairs and pledged to preside over the December congress of the ruling ZANU-PF Party.
The address apparently stunned Zimbabweans and the world as he defied the expectations of millions of people the world over who were anticipating his resignation.
“The congress is due in a few weeks from now. I’ll preside over its processes which must not be prepossessed by any acts calculated to undermine it or to compromise the outcomes in the eyes of the public,” Mugabe said.
The ZANU-PF party, which sacked Mugabe as its leader on Sunday alongside his wife, Grace and other close associates say it would go ahead with the plans to impeach the 93-year-old Mugabe should he fail to resign this Monday.
