Australian Liberal parliamentarian, Tim Wilson on Monday proposed to his long-term partner, Ryan Bolger during his speech on marriage equality in the country’s House of Representatives in Canberra.
Wilson and Bolger have already exchanged engagement rings but had pledged to wait for the country to officially pass the same-sex marriage legislation that was overwhelmingly voted for by Australians in September, before they wed.
The landmark postal vote for same-sex marriage and a marriage equality bill which had passed the country’s senate last week, is being debated in the lower house where it is expected to scale the hurdle this week.
“This debate has been the soundtrack of our relationship. In our first speech, I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands, that they are the answer to the question that we cannot ask,” an emotional Wilson said to his partner.
Wilson, who was a former Human Rights Commissioner in the country then popped the question: “Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?”
Bolger then nodded yes to the applause of other parliamentarians.
Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull’s Liberal-National coalition government and the opposition Labor Party have said they aim to pass the same-sex marriage law by December 7 to make it the 26th country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage although any proposed amendments could extend the deadline.
