The Nigerian government has said it is against the activities of pro-secessionist groups in neighbouring Cameroon and would collaborate with them to secure the territorial integrity of the country.
The country’s High Commissioner designate to the Central African country, Lawan Abba Gashagar stated this when he met with the Cameroonian President, Paul Biya in Yaounde on Thursday.
President Biya had last week declared war on secessionist groups in the country’s Anglophone region with the deployment of the military to the northwest and southwest parts of the country.
Both nations are battling with separatist groups and the respective governments have maintained that unity was non – negotiable even as security forces continue to clampdown on the activities of secessionist groups.
Whereas the Anglophone minority in Cameroon are protesting against the marginalization by the French majority by calling for the creation of Ambazonia State, the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) led by the fugitive Nnamdi Kanu who have repeatedly clashed with the country’s military in agitation for the creation of a Biafra Republic in Nigeria’s southeast region.
