The Nigeria Police has said that the recent reports of threats by some terrorist groups in the country to bomb the nation’s Capital Territory, Abuja and six states was true going by intelligence reports at their disposal.
The Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Command, Mr Sadiq Bello made the revelation on Thursday while speaking during a stakeholders forum organized in Abuja over the purported threat as directed by the Police High Command earlier in the week.
The Police chief however assured members of the public that the command would work with other security agencies in the country to ensure that the threat by the terrorists was not actualized.
Bello said: “The threat to attack the city is real; however, we want to assure members of the public that we are working in collaboration with other sister agencies to ensure that we all enjoy a peaceful yuletide.
While declining to comment on how this would be achieved due to security reasons, he added: “We are doing a lot but we don’t want to mention the strategy so that men of the underworld don’t take advantage of it.
“We are doing a lot especially with our sister security agencies. We have already mapped out strategies and we have already commenced that.
“It may involve massive raids, massive visibility policing, vigorous stop and search and we would also embark on intelligence gathering.”
The CP also pleaded with well – meaning members of the public to come forward with useful information that could help prevent the planned attacks and report any suspicious movement by people of questionable character.
The United States and United Kingdom missions in Nigeria had warned the Nigerian authorities of possible attacks on soft targets in the FCT, Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa and Yobe states.
