A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and social activist, Femi Falana says the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris went beyond his bounds by declaring Mr. Kassim Afegbua, the spokesman to former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida wanted.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Falana said by declaring Afegbua wanted over an alleged offence which was not in any way criminal, the IGP had defamed the spokesman by portraying him as a fugitive before the law.
His words: “No criminal offence known to law has been committed to warrant the action of the Inspector General of Police. By declaring Afegbua wanted when he has not failed to honour the invitation of the police, the IGP has over-reached himself.
“It is undoubtedly that it is the IGP who has defamed Afegbua by portraying him as a fugitive from the law. Therefore Idris is advised to withdraw the offensive declaration without any further delay.
“Since General Babangida has now turned round to insist that he authorized Afegbua to issue the statement his testimony will go a long way to destroy the criminal case which the IGP intends to institute against Afegbua.”
The IGP had earlier this week through a statement signed by Mr. Jimoh Moshood, the Force Public Relations Officer ordered Afegbua’s immediate arrest for allegedly making false statements capable of inciting public disturbance.
