President Muhamadu Buhari on Tuesday summoned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris to answer a query as to why he breached a presidential order given to him to relocate to Benue following incessant herdsmen attacks in the state.
During his official visit to Benue State last week in continuation of his tour of troubled areas in the country, the state Governor, Samuel Ortom had informed Buhari that the IGP flouted his instructions by leaving the state and travelling to neighbouring Nasarawa State.
The President had told stakeholders and Benue people present at the meeting that he was not aware that IGP Idris ignored his instruction to relocate to the state.
Reports say the IGP was the first caller to the Presidential Vila on Tuesday morning, meeting with President Buhari behind closed doors for about 30 minutes before leaving without saying a word to anyone.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu confirmed the Inspector General’s meeting with the President in a text message he sent to select journalists.
“Police IG idris was the first caller this morning at the Presidential Villa apparently o explain his flouting of the President’s order to remain in Benue at the height of the incidence between farmers and herdsmen.
“President Buhari, who is believed to have summoned the IG, received him in a private audience. The IG left about 30 minutes later without speaking to anyone.
“It is believed that, short of a query, the President demanded for a full report on police operations till date after which he will make further decisions. There is renewed resolve to make sure that the killings and bad security situation in Benue State abates,” the text message read.
President Buhari had on February 6 ordered the IG to relocate to Benue State, eight days after suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked parts of the state, killing 73 persons in the process.
