There is confusion inside the chamber of the Nigerian Senate at the moment. Thugs yet to be identified have effectively disrupted the Senate plenary for the day presided over by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
The thugs overpowered the Sergeant-At-Arms and his team and seized the mace which is the official symbol of authority of the Senate.
The hoodlums are said to have afterwards made good their escape by scaling a wall of the National Assembly.
As we file this report, nobody has been able to identify the thugs or the motive behind their mission. Senator Ike Ekweremadu has however sought to placate his agitated colleagues by assuring that the culprits would be brought to book.
It is not also clear how long the Senate would continue sitting since without the mace, their deliberations are as good as null and void.
