The Presidential Committee on Special Detainees linked to the Boko Haram insurgency has submitted its final report to the Federal Government, identifying 6,512 detainees including toddlers who followed their mothers into detention.
Receiving the report in Abuja on Wednesday, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha who was represented by Mr. Olusegun Adekunle, the Permanent Secretary, General Services, Office of the SGF commended the passion and efforts of the committee headed by General Abdullahi Mamman.
Mustapha noted that the report was compiled in five chapters with detailed information on the profiles and categorization of the detainees. He also applauded the Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazzau for initiating the Committee in December, 2016.
While reiterating the commitment of the current administration towards addressing all the security challenges ravaging the country, the SGF promised to forward the report to President Muhamamdu Buhari immediately due to its urgency as it relates to international relations, inadequate infrastructure and human rights with a view to implementing all the recommendations.
Earlier in his speech, the Committee Chairman, General Abdullahi Mamman disclosed that some of the detainees had spent up to nine years awaiting trial and he called for a quick dispensation of justice for suspects who might be innocent.
Mamman thanked President Buhari for taking the plight of Nigerians seriously and giving him the opportunity to carry out a national task, adding that he and other members of his committee were ready to make themselves available for future assignments.
