Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State says his government did not receive any relief material from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for over a year despite being ravaged by the gruesome activities of Boko Haram insurgents.
Gaidam revealed this in a letter he delivered to the House of Representatives Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness through a delegation led by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Ibrahim Lamin.
Speaking during the continuation of investigations into allegations of fraud levelled against Mustapha Maihaja, the Director-General of NEMA, Lamin said his state only received relief materials and donations from private organizations.
In his response, Maihaja said relief items were distributed in Yobe State but could not disclose the identities of the beneficiaries who took delivery of the items nor could he provide documents to validate his claim.
The Acting Chairman of the House Committee, Hon. Ali Isa asked the NEMA DG to endeavour to provide detailed information to the Committee on who received the relief items during its next sitting on Tuesday next week.
The Committee also directed Maihaja to lift the suspension placed on six directors of NEMA, saying they were not given fair hearing before the disciplinary actions were taken against them. The lawmakers described that action as an abuse of the nation’s Civil Service Rules.
