The Tin-can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has impounded two containers laden with Tramadol Hydrochloride (225 milligrams) reportedly imported from India.
The drugs with a total Duty Paid Value of ₦124 million were loaded in 2 x 20 and 1 x 40 feet containers which were marked ‘For Export’ meaning they could not be consumed in India where they were manufactured.
Disclosing the seizure in Lagos on Tuesday, the NCS Area Controller, Mohammed Abdullahi Musa said an undisclosed agent to one of the consignments was already in detention.
Musa revealed that the containers which were declared as electrical static converters and ciproflaxin were intercepted by customs officials of the command after botched attempts to smuggle them out of the seaport.
The fast-selling Tramadol, an opioid analgesic is usually prescribed to treat moderate body pains but has been abused by youths across the country, leading to unhealthy addiction and adverse side effects.
“Despite efforts to discourage importation of illicit drugs, some unrepentant fellows still engage in such misdemeanour. One by 40 and 2 by 20 containers of Tramadol Hydrochloride, 25 mg which were declared electrical static converters and ciproflaxin have been impounded. We are collaborating with NAFDAC and NDLEA on this seizure,” Abdullahi said.
