For the umpteenth time, youths protesting the continued detention of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and his wife, Zeenat on Monday clashed with policemen at the Federal Secretariat Complex in Abuja.
The militant youths who were armed with stones and sticks vandalized vehicles, harassed motorists and chased away a police team after smashing the windscreen of the operational vehicle parked within the vicinity.
They also stoned the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) of the Federal Secretariat Police Station, Linus Ogar, injuring him in the face during the process.
Ogar was reportedly berating the action of the unruly youths who blocked the road when he was hit with a stone. He was subsequently rushed into his office at the secretariat from where he was whisked away to an unidentified hospital for treatment.
Reports say the stone-pelting protesters also crippled activities along the Ahmadu Bello Way, causing a heavy traffic gridlock and overturning a traffic warden cabin on the road while chanting “Free El-Zakzaky.”
The police later reinforced and chased away the rampaging youths, arresting a number of them in the process.
