Former Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero was on Thursday re-arraigned at an Apo District High Court in Abuja alongside a former police commissioner, John Obaniyi on a six-count charge of fraud.
The duo had been accused of misusing the sum of ₦557, 995, 065.00 donated by the Bayelsa State government for the purchase of arms. They were alleged to have diverted the funds into separate bank accounts belonging to them where it generated an interest of ₦16, 412, 315 which they used for personal objectives.
The charge also alleged that the defendants lied to officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) when they told the operatives that they had used the generated interest for official purposes.
Ehindero and Obaniyi who pleaded not guilty to the charges, were first arraigned in 2012 by the ICPC for the alleged offences.
They however filed a preliminary objection, challenging the competence of the charge leveled against them, asking the trial court to suspend their trial pending the determination of their appeal at a higher court.
Following an order of the apex court in December last year, the defendants were told to return to the trial court and face the charges against them.
After taking their pleas, the court admitted them to bail based on the previous conditions and adjourned the matter to June 19.
