No fewer than 50 worshippers have been reportedly killed and many others injured as twin-bomb explosions which bore the signature of the Boko Haram terrorist sect rocked a mosque in Mubi, Adamawa State on Tuesday afternoon.
According to eye witness reports, the death toll is likely to rise as more bodies could be recovered from the scene of the blast which was allegedly set off by a teenage boy wearing a suicide vest.
Although the Police spokesperson in the State, ASP Othman Abubakar gave an initial casualty figure of 24 in the first explosion which occurred at about 1:00 pm while the worshippers were observing the Zuhr (afternoon) prayers, residents say more than 60 bodies had already been buried.
“While people were evacuating the victims of the first blast, another explosion occurred. The scene has been cordoned off by the anti-bomb squad and other security personnel,” ASP Abubakar said.
The Boko Haram insurgents briefly overran Mubi town in late 2014 as they struck the north – eastern part of Nigeria, seizing towns and villages in a quest to establish an Islamic state.
During that period, they renamed the town “Madinatul Islam” or “City of Islam.” However, Mubi has been peaceful since the Nigerian military and civilian task forces ousted them and recovered the town which is a commercial hub and host to the Adamawa State University.
