The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the ‘Not too Young to Run’ bill and shelve his 2019 presidential bid so as to give the younger generation the opportunity to govern the country.
The National President of the ACF, Alhaji Yerima Shettima stated this on Tuesday while reacting to the Democracy Day broadcast of the President in which he said he would sign the bill into law in a few days.
Shettima said that there was nothing encouraging in Buhari promising Nigerians that he would soon sign the bill, which seeks to reduce the minimum age requirement for contesting elective positions in the country.
Shettima maintained that whether Buhari quit the stage for the younger generation to contest in the 2019 presidency or not, Nigerians would speak for themselves during the 2019 polls.
He stressed that it was one thing for President Buhari to promise Nigerians that he would sign the bill and another thing for him to match his words with action by quitting the stage.
“There is nothing extraordinary about what he (President Buhari) said. I am not keen about it. Nigerians will decide when the time comes. There is nothing interesting about it.
“There is nothing different from what we said. The younger generation must be given the opportunity to govern this country. That’s all. It is one thing to say, it is another thing for him to implement. It has always been so. So, I have not seen anything new,” Shettima said.
