Nobel laureate and acclaimed human rights activist, Professor Wole Soyinka says it was inappropriate and surprising for President Muhammadu Buhari to honour Bashorun Moshood Abiola and at the same time be loyal to late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.
He stated this on Tuesday in Abuja while speaking at the 2018 Special National Honours Investiture for Abiola in recognition of his struggle to reclaim his mandate in the annulled June 12 elections at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa.
Soyinka said it was inconceivable to believe that Buhari could recognize Abiola’s struggles and on the other hand hail Abacha whom he described as the worst dictator the nation had ever witnessed in its history. He stated: “It is not possible to honour MKO in one breath and to honour his tormentor in another breath.”
While recalling the contributions of many Nigerians who fought for the nation’s democracy, Soyinka commended President Buhari for apologizing to Nigerians and the Abiola family in particular for the injustice done by the annulment of the election and Abiola’s death, which has been attributed to the late Abacha.
