The Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Ademola Adeleke has won the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party for the September 22 governorship election in the state.
Adeleke polled a total of 1,569 votes to defeat his closest rival and the Chairman of Mutual Assurance Plc, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi whose initial votes of 1,559 at the first count increased to 1,562 after they were recounted.
A former Secretary to the Osun State Government, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade scored 52 votes while a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Nathaniel Oke, polled three votes. A total of 56 votes were voided.
Adeleke will contest the governorship election with the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola.
Some of the aspirants had announced their withdrawal from the primary before the exercise which was held at the premises of GMT Hotel and Events Centre started.
They included a former Minister of Youth Development, Prof. Adeolu Durotoye, former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Chief Lere Oyewunmi, Olasunkanmi Akinlabi, Felix Ogunwale, Adejare Bello and Ayoade Adewopo.
The Chairman of the Osun State PDP Governorship Electoral Panel and Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson had a hectic time during the process as he was virtually on his feet throughout the duration of the voting, which ended at 7:30 pm.
Dickson had earlier in his speech urged the delegates to pick the most popular aspirant that would fly the party’s flag in the governorship poll, adding that the panel would not tamper with the wish of the people.
“This exercise will be free, fair, transparent and credible. The delegates will pick the candidate of the party. We won’t tamper with the wish of the people,” Dickson said.
Adeleke, nicknamed the ‘Dancing Senator’ will now slug it out with the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola who had earlier on Saturday clinched the party’s ticket as well as other candidates from other political party.
