Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has condemned Tuesday’s invasion of the National Assembly by security operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Police without authorization from the presidency
Osinbajo, through a statement signed by his spokesman, Laolu Akande on Tuesday in Abuja described the invasion as a gross violation of constitutional order and rule of law in the country.
“Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has described the unauthorized takeover of the National Assembly complex earlier today as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.
“According to him, the unlawful act which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency is condemnable and completely unacceptable.
“By this statement, Professor Osinbajo is consequently assuring Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in this travesty will be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action,” the statement read.
As a fallout of the development, the Director of the DSS, Lawal Daura was reportedly arrested and detained by a team of police officers shortly after a meeting he had with Osinbajo, who had earlier dismissed him for allegedly breaching national security.
Similarly, the British High Commission also condemned the incident, saying it would only accept a democratic process that recognizes the rights of Nigerians to participate in election process.
A statement released by Joe Abuku, a spokesperson at the United Kingdom Embassy in Abuja said the British government was aware of the situation and is closely monitoring the situation at the National Assembly as well as other political developments.
“The United Kingdom supports a process whereby the people of Nigeria can exercise their democratic right to vote and be voted for. We favour a free, fair, credible and peaceful process and the independence of institutions, which allow for that,” Aduku said.
The statement comes hours after Ben Murray-Bruce, the Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the Assembly asked that foreign sanctions be meted out on those involved in the siege on the parliament.
