A Chinese tourist taking photographs has reportedly died while another was injured after they were attacked by a hippopotamus at Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort in Naivasha, Kenya.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, the 66-year-old tourist, Chang Ming Chuang was pronounced dead on arrival at the Naivasha District Hospital while Wu Peng Te, 62, survived the hippo attack.

“We are sad to announce the death of a Chinese tourist who was attacked by a #hippo while taking pictures on the shores of Lake Naivasha yesterday evening,” the Kenya Wildlife Service tweeted on Sunday.

“His colleague survived with minor bruises and was treated at #Naivasha District Hospital. We are tracking the hippo,” the tweet added.

A Kenyan newspaper, The Star reported that the man was taking pictures with his friends near a hotel when the hippo attacked.

According to the tabloid, Sunday’s attack brings to six, the number of people who have been attacked and killed by hippos in Naivasha, a city located 90 kilometres northwest of Nairobi, the country’s capital since the beginning of this year.

An eyewitness who identified himself as James Omollo however said the tourist got too close to the animal which turned against him, biting him on the chest and making the victim to bleed profusely.

Kenya’s Ministry of Tourism says that in 2017 alone, nearly 1.5 million tourists visited the country which has witnessed several months of heavy rains this year, resulting in serious flooding, including around Lake Naivasha.
