Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife and son on Tuesday morning escaped an assassination attempt by some yet-to-be identified armed attackers.
According to a statement released by Ekweremadu’s Media aide, Uche Anichukwu, the armed men reportedly beat the security at the Deputy Senate President’s Apo Quarters residence in Abuja and gained access into it at about 4.oo am.
The statement said the attackers could not shoot for fear of attracting the attention of neighbours and the security personnel on duty. Instead, they grabbed the senator’s son and ordered him to lead them to his father’s bedroom.
It was inside the Senator’s bedroom that a struggle ensued which led to the arrest of one of the assailants who had dangerous weapons and housebreaking devices in his possession while the rest managed to escape.
The arrested member of the gang has however refused to reveal any information on the motives behind the failed operation. He has been handed over to the police at Apo Police Station.
Ekweremadu who was in the house with his wife and one of his sons at the time of Tuesday’s attack had on November 17, 2015 narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on his life.
