Michael Cohen, the former Attorney to President Donald Trump of the United States has been handed a 3-year jail term by a Manhattan judge.
Cohen was sentenced on Wednesday by Judge William Pauley for crimes including Trump’s campaign finance violation, tax evasion and lying to the American Congress.
Before reeling out the sentence, Pauley said Cohen had pleaded guilty to a ‘veritable smorgasbord of fraudulent conduct’ and had therefore ‘lost his moral compass’.
While pleading his case for leniency, Cohen accused President Trump of causing him to follow a path of darkness rather than light as well as aiding in covering up his many dirty deeds.
Prosecutors in the Justice Department’s Southern District of New York had charged Cohen with eight felony counts in August, including tax evasion, making false statements to a financial institution and campaign finance violations.
Last month, special counsel Robert Mueller, who was tasked with investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election tacked on an additional count of lying to Congress.
