One person was shot and a Police vehicle burnt during a rally organized by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Thursday.
The rally which was attended by thousands of PDP supporters, including a former governor of the state, Sule Lamido turned violent after a Police officer, who was trying to maintain the peace shot one of the participants.
Following the shooting which has left the victim hospitalized at Gwaram General Hospital, a mob turned on the police officers at the rally and burned a police vehicle.
Although what led to the shooting still remains unclear, Lamido, who was on the podium at the time of the incident called for calm but the angry mob refused to heed his call and set the vehicle ablaze.
The incident forced Lamido to step down from the podium to address the youths who had started targeting police officers at the event.
Recall that the Jigawa State Police command had last week barred the PDP from campaigning at a market in Gumel Local Government Area.
The state Police Commissioner, Bala Senchi had said using the venue on a market day could create panic and other security challenges for the state.
That directive however did not go down well with the PDP in the state which described the Police as unfair to the opposition in Jigawa.
