The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has warned the military and other security agencies in Nigeria not to interfere in the forthcoming elections as they have no role to play in the process.
Speaking on Tuesday while addressing members of the party at the 84th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Abuja, Atiku said President Buhari has never been a true democrat and therefore will not obey the nation’s Constitution or obey the rule of law.
Atiku ws apparently reacting to President Muhammadu Buhari’s order to the military and other security agencies to deal ruthlessly with anyone caught trying to snatch ballot boxes or interfere with the electoral process. The President had said ballot box snatchers would pay with their own lives.
He said: “I stated in clear terms and quoted former President Goodluck Jonathan that my ambition is not worth the life of any Nigerian. That man is a great man.
“Today, I call on President Buhari to make that same commitment to the people whose mandate he holds while urging security agencies to uphold our constitution with an understanding that voting is a civil activity and civic responsibility.
“The Nigerian military is constitutionally responsible for protecting our territorial integrity and protection of our national borders and has no role to play in the conduct of elections.
“The military, go back and study your constitution .Go back and study the Army Act and other subsidiary legislations. The Army, you have no role to play in the conduct of elections whatsoever.”
