The Oyo State Police Command has arrested the Chief Whip of the state’s House of Assembly, Honourable Wasiu Olafisoye Akinmoyede in connection with the assassination of the senatorial candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Honourable Temitope Olatoye, popularly known as Sugar.
Honourable Akinmoyede, who represents Lagelu state constituency is suspected to have had a hand in the killing of Honourable Olatoye during last Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
The Police has written a letter to the State House of Assembly that Hon. Akinmoyede, who had reportedly been a political rival to the slain lawmaker in Lagelu Local Government Area over the years, was currently under investigation.
Olatoye represented the constituency in the House of Assembly between 2011 and 2015 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) before moving ahead to represent Lagelu/Akinyele federal constituency in the House of Representatives.
He also contested for the party’s senatorial ticket but lost to the former senate leader, Teslim Folarin while Akinmoyede, who currently represents the same constituency in the state House of Assembly was once chairman of the same local government council.
Confirming Akinmoyede’s arrest, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olagunju Ojo told reporters that the House has been notified of the development through a letter.
“I am not aware that he has been taken to Abuja. I am only aware that he is under investigation but I am not sure if he is in Abuja or not,” Ojo said.
On whether the State House of Assembly received a letter of his arrest or investigation, he added: “Yes, we received a letter that he is under investigation. I am not aware if he has been taken to Abuja or not.”
