Former Golden Eaglet, Victor Osimhen scored a hat-trick as Nigeria’s Under 23 team swept aside their Libyan opponents in the second leg tie of their Olympic qualifiers played at the Steven Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
The 4–0 drubbing ensured that the Dream Team VII booked a spot in the third qualifying round of the 2020 Olympic Games football tournament.
The Belgium-based Osimhen, who was drafted into the team after a shock 2-0 first leg defeat in Tripoli last week Wednesday demonstrated his worth on the field of play.
Osimhen, on loan to Charleroi from German Bundesliga outfit, VFL Wolfsburg opened the scoring after 33 minutes of play. The first half score line would have been increased by the Nigerians but they were severally denied by the woodwork.
The second half was a one-way traffic toward the Libyan goalmouth and the impressive Osimhen completed his hat-trick with goals in the 67th and 82nd minutes.
The Libyans needed at least a goal to move ahead on aggregate through the away-goal rule but it was the Nigerian team who struck again, this time through David Okereke in the final minute of play.
Nigeria, the most successful African country in Olympics football will face the winner of Tuesday’s encounter between Kenya and Sudan. The Sudanese hold a 2-0 advantage going into the match.
Olympics qualifiers are restricted to under-23 footballers with three over-age stars permitted at the finals.
