Nigeria international and Sporting Charleroi of Belgium striker, Victor Osimhen on Sunday night set a new record by scoring the fastest goal in the history of the Belgian First Division league.
The 20-year-old Osimhen who is loan from Wolfsburg of Germany took only 8.15 seconds to open the scoring in Charleroi’s 3-2 loss to Antwerp at the Bosuilstadion, erasing the previous 10.8 seconds record set by Standard Liege’s Imoh Ezekiel on August 11, 2013.
Osimhen took advantage of a mix-up in the Antwerp defense, latching onto a loose ball and burst into the penalty area before firing a right footed shot past goalkeeper Sinan Bolat.
Prior to the game, Osimhen had already been crowned the winner of the Nigerian Golden Shoe and his strike against Antwerp took his tally for the season to 19 league goals.
With his loan spell at Charleroi coming to an end, his future could be brightened if he is included in the Super Eagles 23-man squad which will participate in next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be hosted by Egypt.
