Anthony Joshua has vowed to reclaim the belts he lost to Andy Ruiz Jr on Sunday morning. Joshua was floored four times as Ruiz defied his underdog status to win in seven rounds and deliver a true shock to the boxing world at the Madison Square Garden.
Describing his shock heavyweight world-title defeat as a minor setback, the 29-year-old Joshua said the loss was a test of character, adding that he would adjust and ‘bounce back’ in due course.
A rematch clause was part of the contract and Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn said the rematch is expected to take place in England in November or December this year. Interestingly, Ruiz says he will take the contest at any time.
Joshua had a concussion test after falling to a first defeat of his 23-fight career against a man who took the contest at short notice when original opponent, Jarrell Miller failed drugs tests.
After scoring a third-round knock down, Joshua was floored twice before the end of the round and put down twice more in the seventh before the bout was waved off.
“I’m still a champ and I will rectify it to get the belts back,” Joshua, who lost the IBF, WBA and WBO world titles to Ruiz said during a press conference.
In becoming Mexico’s first world heavyweight champion, the 29-year-old Ruiz now holds three of the four major belts, with Wilder in possession of the other. At 268lbs, he was also the heaviest opponent Joshua has shared a ring with.
