Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the senator representing Delta Central, has been elected Deputy President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Omo-Agege polled 68 votes to defeat his rival and former deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu who polled 37 votes.
Both Senate President and Deputy President are now of the All Progressives Congress, contrary to what happened in 2015, when the opposition Peoples Democratic Party clinched the Deputy Senate President position.
The leadership of the All Progressives Congress had insisted that the ninth National Assembly would be led by only its candidaates, being the ruling party. The APC also endorsed Omo-Agege as Deputy Senate President and Lawan as Senate President.
