Liverpool erased the disappointment of last season’s UEFA Champions League final loss to Spain’s Real Madrid by claiming the trophy for the sixth time with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspurs in Madrid on Saturday night.
Mohamed Salah, who was a disconsolate and tearful figure when he was injured early in that loss to Madrid last season was the one who set The Reds on their way to victory this time with a penalty goal only two minutes into the match. Spurs’ Moussa Sissoko was contentiously punished for handling the ball in the 18 yard box.
In a final that rarely touched the standards of the blockbuster semi-finals which made this an all-Premier League showpiece, Spurs had chances but were denied by Liverpool keeper, Alisson who made daring saves to prevent Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Christian Eriksen from getting on the score sheet.
Their failure to capitalize on their opportunities was punished when substitute Divock Origi ensured manager Jurgen Klopp won his first trophy as Liverpool manager by driving low and powerfully past Hugo Lloris with just three minutes left on the clock.
By lifting the trophy which was snatched from their grasp in Ukraine last season, Liverpool now stand behind only Real Madrid and Italy’s AC Milan as serial winners of this tournament.
