It is now apparent that some Nigerian lawyers and civil society organizations have reported what they considered to be crimes against humanity unleashed on peaceful protesters by security personnel during the recent #EndSARS protests in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria to the International Criminal Court.
A report by the BBC has indicated that the office of the ICC Prosecutor has confirmed its receipt of information on the alleged crimes in Nigeria.
The International Criminal Court, according to the report, is in the process of assessing the information to see if it meets the court’s legal criteria for opening an investigation according to the Rome Statute.
The protests in Nigeria attracted global attention after soldiers opened fire on unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20. The occurrence generated a lot of condemnation from various quarters around the world even as official government quarters and the Nigerian Army refused to accept responsibility for the tragedy.
However, a spokesman for the Army later disclosed that indeed they were invited to the Lekki Toll Gate by the Lagos State government following the government’s imposition of curfew on the city. He however did not accept that the soldiers opened fire on the protesters.
